abstract

in this paper, the transient inertial viscoelastic flow around a circular cylinder is investigated numerically. a second order finite-volume method is used to increase the numerical accuracy. here, the giesekus model is used as the constitutive equation. this nonlinear model has prominent ability in describing normal stress differences and viscosity in power-law regions. the impacts of the elasticity and reynolds number on the shedding frequency are discussed. also, drag reduction phenomenon in the viscoelastic flow is studied by extracting pressure distribution on the cylinder surface. the obtained results are in good agreement with recent experimental and numerical investigations reported in the literature for newtonian fluids.

Simulation of Unsteady Laminar Flow around a Circular Cylinder

Abstract In this paper, unsteady laminar flow around a circular cylinder has been studied. Navier-stokes equations solved by Simple C algorithm exerted to specified structured and unstructured grids. Equations solved by staggered method and discretization of those done by upwind method. The mean drag coefficient, lift coefficient and strouhal number are compared from current work at three diffe...

Numerical Simulation of Sediment-Laden Flow Around a Circular Cylinder

In this paper, the sediment-laden flow around a circular cylinder is numerically simulated in order to obtain better understanding of hydrodynamics associated. A range of cases with different Reynolds numbers (Re) are studies. The effects of the concentration of the sediment on the drag coefficient are investigated. Results show that due to the fact that the laden sand particle colliding the cy...

Numerical investigation of steady suction control of flow around a circular cylinder

This paper numerically investigates the effectiveness of the control of steady suction on a stationary circular cylinder with several isolated suction holes on the surface at a subcritical Reynolds number. The control effectiveness as a function of the azimuthal position, spanwise spacing and suction flow rate of the suction holes on the control of the aerodynamic forces on the cylinder and the...

Numerical investigation of flow and scour around a vertical circular cylinder.

Flow and scour around a vertical cylinder exposed to current are investigated by using a three-dimensional numerical model based on incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The model incorporates (i) k-ω turbulence closure, (ii) vortex-shedding processes, (iii) sediment transport (both bed and suspended load), as well as (iv) bed morphology. The influence of vortex shedding and...

Motion of a viscoelastic micellar fluid around a cylinder: flow and fracture.

We present an experimental study of the motion of a viscoelastic micellar fluid around a moving cylinder, which ranges from fluidlike flow to solidlike tearing and fracture, depending on the cylinder radius and velocity. The observation of crack propagation driven by the cylinder indicates an extremely low tear strength, approximately equal to the steady state surface tension of the fluid. At t...

Numerical Computation of a Viscous Flow around a Circular Cylinder on a Cartesian Grid

We introduce a novel cut-cell Cartesian grid method that preserves the spectral properties of convection and diffusion. That is, convection is discretised by a skewsymmetric operator and diffusion is approximated by a symmetric positive-definite coefficient matrix. Such a symmetry-preserving discretisation of the Navier-Stokes equations is stable on any grid, and conserves the mass, momentum an...
